Abstract

Safety is a key component of the social sustainability of a city. This study explores how perceptions of safety and urban vitality are related in a post-pandemic Latin American context. The approach is qualitative, involving a photovoice carried out with the participation of 19 individuals from Santiago, and the collection of 436 images during February and March 2023. Findings confirm the positive effect of recreational, cultural, sports, and artistic activities on security, as well as the synergistic relationship between these activities, the use of public space, the recognition of people, and the perception of collective care. Conclusions warn of the risks posed by abandoned spaces, commercial saturation of streets, and gentrification. At the same time, they highlight the importance of social diversity, human rights protection, and respect for gender identity and expression as crucial aspects in understanding the perceptions of security and the urban experience.
