BRICS’ congruence in the International Security Agenda: The syrian case (period 2011–2015)

Abstract

The following paper starts from the theoretical postulate that the institutionalization of the associative dynamics between the agents increases their cooperation and collective action, even when we speak of international cooperation between nations. Therefore, our purpose is to analyze this phenomenon on an international scale, observing how Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa made use of the BRICS institutional space in order to build a joint position on issues on the international political agenda, in this case regarding the Syrian conflict. To do this, an analysis of the discourse will be carried out to systematize the position of the group based on the study of the official documentation of the BRICS (specifically speaking, the presidential Summits that arose during the group’s annual meetings) regarding the positions adopted vis-à-vis the Syria case throughout the period 2011–2015.
