Abstract

This paper is limited to the analysis and study of terrorism, a phenomenon that has emerged as a significant international problem since the 1960s. For this, first a conceptual distinction is made between terrorism and guerrilla, strategies that are often confused. Then a characterization of the terrorist groups is carried out, identifying the types that emerged in the West in the 70s and 80s. In the post-Cold War, terrorism has acquired particular characteristics because the disappearance of the East-West conflict has produced a laxity in the international system, thanks to which ethnic and regional conflicts have proliferated and new radical movements that lead to unprecedented forms of terrorism are born. However, we maintain that Islamic fundamentalist groups manifest particular characteristics, which is why those that stand out for their strength and militancy are identified, so it cannot be predicted that they will exhaust their capacity for action and end up disappearing.
