Abstract

Although there is a dichotomy between the principles enunciated in the 1945 Charter and reality, the United Nations is the only universal mechanism for settling disputes and guaranteeing international peace. However, the new international environment requires a critical examination of its role in the past that helps it face the great challenges and makes possible the transition of humanity towards a new world order. By virtue of the foregoing, this paper offers a personal and national vision - specifically the case of Brazil, one of the founding members of the United Nations - about the future of this organization, especially in regard to the restructuring of the Security Council and the revitalization of the General Assembly.
