About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Comunicación y Medios is a biannual, open access scholarly journal founded in 1981. Published by the Universidad de Chile’s Institute of Communication and Images, the journal seeks to further comprehend and critically analyze topics that define the field of communications, culture, audiovisual production, and journalism. Over the last 40 years, Comunicación y Medios has undergone several changes. During its first decades, the journal was primarily an instrument of outreach for the Universidad de Chile’s School of Journalism and Department of Media Studies. As of 2008, the publication was redefined as an academic and scientific journal, expanding its list of contributors and strengthening its editorial processes in order to incorporate international standards. Since 2009, Comunicación y Medios has been published exclusively as an online journal and, as of 2016, all the articles are translated. Likewise, the articles are available in different digital formats (ePub, pdf, xml, mp3).

The journal considers communication as an interdisciplinary field that addresses multidimensional problems and objects requiring heterogeneous approaches. As an issue, communication implies discourses, objects, practices, subjectivities, institutions, and ever-changing interrelations. It also has an enormous impact on contemporary societies. As a field, communication offers a space of analysis where knowledge, notions, and diverse methodologies converge. The interdisciplinary nature of communication implies a space of critical knowledge inspired by traditions that range from computer science and cybernetics to arts and philosophy. Thus, the field of communication is interested in the study of culture industries, processes of mediation and mediatization, the ethical and political dimensions of communication, rhetoric, interpersonal relations, and reflections on information technology, to mention several examples.

Comunicación y Medios contains the following sections: Editorial, Thematic Dossier Editorial, Miscellaneous, Thematic Dossier, Documents, and Reviews.

The journal receives article submissions all year round for its miscellaneous section. Thematic dossiers will indicate submission deadlines in their calls for papers.

New issues of Comunicación y Medios are digitally published on January 1 and July 1.

The Miscellaneous Section

Submissions for this section address various topics, problems, and methodologies within the journal’s general scope. Comunicación y Medios receives manuscripts for this section all year round.

Thematic Dossiers

Comunicación y Medios encourages the scientific community to propose thematic dossiers. These special issues aim to explore new approaches, push the limits of the field, identify and critically address new problems and objects of study within the journal’s interests, and visibilize innovative methodologies.

The acceptance of a thematic dossier depends on the presentation of a written proposal that indicates objectives, topic, expected contributions, and methodology for the special issue. Each thematic dossier proposal will be evaluated by the Editorial Board. If accepted, the editors of the dossier will be responsible for requesting and receiving manuscripts. Once the articles are received, they will undergo a double-blind evaluation. All articles will be evaluated according to the editorial norms of Comunicación y Medios.
